The old part of the city of Ibiza, called Dalt Vila, is the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the island. On 4th December 1999, UNESCO declared the walled site as a World Heritage Site for being the best preserved coastal fortress in the Mediterranean. Also included in the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta, the necropolis of Puig des Molins and oceanic Posidonia meadows that surround the island.
Dalt Vila has its main entrance at the Portal de Ses Taules, flanked by two Roman statues. A drawbridge opposite the old market of Ibiza, in the Marina district. This access is known as the rake which accesses the parade ground and the Plaça de la Vila. The walled enclosure comprises seven bastions: That of Sant Pere or Portal Nou, that of Sant Jaume, Sant Jordi, Sant Bernat, Santa Tecla, Sant Joan and Santa Llúcia. From the ramparts you have a wonderful view over the city, the harbour and the sea.
The old town of Dalt Vila is a large open air museum and houses cultural places of interest. At the top stands the Gothic Cathedral inside which houses the Diocesan Museum. Adjacent to this is the castle, former home of the Governor. In the Plaza de la Catedral, you will find the Archaeological Museum, with important remains from the Punic period. Once at the Town Hall, you can visit the church of Santo Domingo, Can Botino, the church of Sant Cristòfol, the Chapel of Sant Ciriac, the Puget Museum, the Interpretation Centre of Yabisa Madina, Broner House and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The citadel of Dalt Vila is a small town with narrow streets and cobbled squares, white houses and luxurious mansions. In addition there are unique shops, great restaurants, nice terraces, local fashion houses with different environments and interesting art galleries. Also, Dalt Vila is the perfect setting for the great cultural and social events of the island of Ibiza which are held throughout the year: The Medieval Fair, the Adlib Fashion Rubway, the Eivissa Jazz Festival, the Ibiza International Meetic Summit, among many others.
